Make the Moon’s transits work for you. Here’s a quick how to guide on using The Moon’s monthly transits to your own chart to schedule the best events for each day and even predict what themes will be important to you at different days during the month coming up. The best bit – you can maximise your month and choose the best days for each of your favourite activities.

I hope you all should know your Moon Sign and what it means by its position in your birthchart? As I mentioned in the earlier post, when the Moon conjuncts that same position each month is when you will feel the most content, the most centred and the most thoughtful. Unless your Moon is badly afflicted and you may want to focus on the time that the Moon conjuncts a happier planet like Sun, Venus or Jupiter.

This is also the time of your Lunar Return each month and in the exact minute that it is conjunct the same birth degree you will have a predictive snapshot of the month ahead. Very good predictive tool but to be used only alongside the Solar Return, Progressions and Transits. But I’ll do a separate post on this topic at some other time.

Starting from the day/hour/minute (if you want to be really picky) the transiting Moon hits your natal Moon, you can then follow the rest of it’s transit through the rest of the signs and have a good idea of when you’ll feel like; spending money or saving it, seeing loads of friends or having some quality ‘me’ time, going out for a long run or just mooching on the sofa with giant bars of chocolate! I use this all the time and have found it really helpful in planning my month a little bit more wisely. I hope it’s helpful for you too…here goes…

So, here’s the way to do it. First, find out which house your natal Moon sits. The Moon spends roughly 2.5 days in each sign and because of uneven houses in the natal chart, you might have the Moon in one house for longer if it’s a lot bigger than the others or if you have intercepted signs. When the moon moves through your own houses, you will notice slight shifts in your feelings over those days…

Moon in First House: you will want to be noticed! Good hair days and looking and feeling good about your appearance. You will want a new outfit or wear something that stands out!  Think Aries (traditional ruler of 1st house) and Me, Me, Me! You’ll not wnt to be a couch potato, you’ll want to be running, rushing and dazzling everyone nearby. You will likely feel more assertive, energetic and confident than usual in your emotional matters.

Moon in Second House: you will want to have lots of your things around you. You will want to save, hang on and cling to your possessions, trophies and loved ones. You will want to collect, gather and get more things. Strangely, this influence often makes you want to go shopping but only for valuable or collectible items. It makes you inclined to want to save your pennies so you’ll be looking for bargains. Emotionally, you may be more sentimental, sensual or pragmatic that the norm.

Moon in the Third House: you will want to talk, msg, call and chat to nearly everyone you know (or even complete strangers). You will want to communicate and talk about your feelings to almost anyone. You will feel like moving about constantly. Jiggling about on spot if you have to because sitting still will frustrate you no end! You might take or plan short trips. Your emotions will be thought over and discussed more than at any other time.  You may be more curious, flirty or talkative on these days in your month.

Moon in the Fourth House: you will want to stay close to home during this time of the month. You’ll want to spend time with your family or loved ones. It’s all about having those cosy comforts that make you feel safe are the main focus for the next two days. You will be more sensitive and probably having stronger feelings about everything that matters to you. Think of the crab (Cancer/Fourth House symbol) with his home on his back ready to scuttle away and retreat from the world at any moment.

Moon in the Fifth House: it’s time to Partay! You’ll want to be the biggest, loudest, funnest social butterfly – you’ll be planning social outings, romantic evenings or flirty girls/boys’ nights out. There’s no doubt, you’ll want to indulge your latest hobbies and be out and about on the social scene.  This is the best time in your month to go on a date, have a night out with friends, go play your favourite sports or make a new creative masterpiece. You’ll feel more alive, creative and romantic, so use it!

Did you know that you can use your Moon sign to be more emotionally intelligent and get the most out of each month? By paying attention to the movements of the Moon as it trails across all sections of your chart within the lunar month (about 27.5 days give or take a few hours…) It will touch on key points, planets, trigger aspects and make its presence known in each house, showing you which parts of your life are going to be the focus for the 2 and a bit days that the moon spends in a house or sign. I like to use the houses because I think this is more accurate than just using the signs.

So, the first place to start is to look at your birth chart. Where is your Moon in the chart? The 1st house? The 5th? This is the house where you will always feel the most powerful effect of the Moon and the most emotionally comfortable.  Then by using your chosen Astrology software take a look at the transits to your birth chart on any particular day in the coming month. You will be able to see the Moon moving through a particlar house and it will be the matters governed by this house that will be front and centre on the date selected. Make sense?

Ok, let’s look at the matters ruled by each of the houses and then you can take a closer look at your Moon’s movements through the chart. This is just shorthand meanings for more in depth explanations of the houses and their meanings, try the articles section of www.astro.com.

1st house = your identity, your social mask, your appearance

2nd house = what you give the most value to, your personal possessions/skills and your attitude to money

3rd house = how you comunicate, your relationship with siblings, short journeys and your intellectual outlook

4th house = what is home, your sense of family, the most influential parent (Mother or Father) and your emotional well being

5th house = what are you attracted to, where and how do you find pleasure, hobbies and interests, creative projects and children

6th house = your daily routine, your work ethic and attitude to serving others, your health

7th house = your most important partnerships (lovers, wives/husbands, business partners), how you relate to others, what you find the most meaningful qualities from others

8th house = your sexuality, your attitude to taboos, death and underworld topics, how you approach other people’s money

9th house = how you learn, your philsophy on life, society and its laws, how you acquire new skills, new cultures and all things foreign

10th house = your public life, your reputation, your career and the lesser influential parent (Mother or Father)

11th house = your humanity, you in group activities, your friends, your idealism about how the world should be

12th house = your dreams, your unconscious motivations, your attitude to making sacrifices, your self-sabotaging behaviours

Each day the Moon will be in one of these houses and you should be able to follow it’s movements so you can feel how your focus changes ever few days so that new matters are emphasised around you. But, as with everything to do with the Moon in your chart, you are more likely to feel this energy rather than experience it coming from others so pay attention to your inner emotional landscape to see if you can notice when it shifts.

I’ll be back soon to take more about how you can plan your month to the best advantage using only the Moon’s  monthly transits.

I realised that before I write a series of articles on the meaning of each planet and what they can bring to your birth chart I thought I’d better do a quick run through of the different groups and how they operate.

The Luminaries – The Sun & The Moon

These two are the giant lights in your birth chart with the Sun shining a spotlight on whatever part in falls and by sign, how that spotlight is used. And the Moon is your sanctuary part of the chart and shows by house and by sign how we emote and refuel from interactions with the outside world.

The Personal Planets – Mercury, Venus & Mars

These three planets show how you think (Mercury), value (Venus) and act (Mars) with yourself and to others. All three of these planets motivations should be fairly well known and make up much of what you say you are to others. i.e. ‘I’m really shy’, ‘I like to think things over’, ‘It takes me two seconds to fall in love’.

The Outer Planets – Chiron, Jupiter & Saturn

These two are the bridge between what we know about ourselves and the other, more unconscious drives and actions.

Saturn has a lot to do with how you use and view authority and structure. Its also where you will find the limitation in your chart. Saturn restricts and delays.

Jupiter is the total opposite – wherever it sits in the chart that is where good things happen, where things are always growing, expanding. Jupiter is much about how we learn, teach and give ourselves to others.

Chiron is the psychic wound. It is where we can be hurt the most. It shows the hang-up that you have and will try to cover up as much as possible. But it can also show our healing powers and how we can help others to help ourselves.

The Transcendental Planets – Uranus, Neptune & Pluto

These three planets function the chart but we won’t really understand them or consciously acknowledge it. They rule those bits of ourselves that are unpredictable, confusing and largely out of our control.

Uranus is where we like things to be constantly changing. Depending on sign and house placements it will show how we rebel, how we react to changes and what is unconventional about us.

Neptune is our ability to fool ourselves. It is all about confusion, illusion and delusion. It is one of the most difficult planets to really understand in the chart. Where Neptune falls is where we see only what we want to and can blithely ignore the real facts even if they right in front of us. But it is also about how and where we express selfless, unconditional love.

Pluto, where it falls in the chart, shows what parts of our lives we will find in phoenix cycles of death and rebirth. Pluto brings transformation so depending  on the house in the chart you will find that part of yourself or your life will end and start again periodically. It is difficult not to see it as negative but actually most of what is killed off or destroyed was unnecessary and detrimental to your well being, even if you can’t appreciate it at the time. Pluto was made for the maxim ‘what does not kill us only makes us stronger’.

There’s a web like a spider’s web
Made of silver light and shadows
Spun by the moon in my room last night
It’s a web made to catch a dream
Hold it tight ’til I awaken
As if to tell me my dream is all right

~ Traditional Folk Song

Just as the Sun falls in a certain sign in your chart so too will the moon. Generally the Moon Sign will be a big factor in how you relate to yourself, to others and your environment.  I think its important to know as much about your Moon sign as you do about your Sun because you will find that in times of trouble and upset, your Moon is likely to take control.

If, for example, you have the Sun in an Air sign but the Moon in Earth and someone says something offensive to you or you hear that someone said hurtful things behind your back then it will the Moon Sign that rules in your reactions.

One of the best things I ever read was that you can use your Moon to heal yourself. It sounds kooky, but it’s actually really simple. Depending on what’s happened and where you Moon is located in your chart you may find that going back to your Moon after tough times is the quickest way to feel better.

Fire Moons: Get active, go out and express yourself. Do something creative, something that makes you feel alive and a brighter spark in the world.

Earth Moons: Reconnect with nature and your place in it. Go for a long beach walk, a warm bubble bath, listen to some music, have some lovely food and wine. Use all of your senses in all that you do.

Air Moons: Communicate and socialise. Make plans to see friends and talk it all out. Write in a journal to yourself, without censoring anything. Start reading something that you realy like again – books, magazines, newspapers, blogs.

Water Moons: Wallow in your feelings. Sounds daft but if you let all the emotion swirl around and then release it through meditation or relaxing activities you’ll find it eases. Go swimming, the roar or the water will drown out those overwhelming feelings. Use your intuition to feel how to heal.

It doesn’t matter what you do, just be kind to your Moon Sign and it will love you back tenfold.

For a deeper look at what your Moon sign is in your chart, take a look at this clip from Annabel Burton interview. I think it’s a good explanation of how the Moon drives your emotions in your natal chart.
